Hot Topic: Digital Rights Management – 2006 Perspective

We asked Michael Childers, the Digital Rights guru at IMS, to comment a bit on the future of airborne content and present a bit of background on 2006 DRM highlights. We wanted to give our readers a look at the events that might affect the way we look at the in-flight entertainment environment this year. News articles continually talk about how the latest portable entertainment device will impact on-aircraft applications but until features like connectivity infrastructure improve, their utility will be limited. Why? While DRM issues can enable or disable passenger content download, connectivity allows content upload automation and current event solutions such as news, weather and sports. So, both onboard and uploaded content are affected, and both are controlled by DRM if passenger download is involved. With the advent of AirCell, OnAir and AeroMobile services (and cheaper onboard servers and content delivery systems), our readers might want to track the changes in technology and hardware as well as regulations that affect content.
