Hot Topic: Wiring Problems On The Horizon!

If you were unlucky enough to be caught in the US travel mess last week, this Hot Topic is for you. Wiring and FAA rulings are at the bottom of the mess that cancelled over 4000 flights last week alone. It probably isn't over as aging airplane take center stave in an ongoing revolution to improve the evolution of aging aircraft in the US. While all systems of aging airplanes are under scrutiny, IFE and associated wiring will be of interest to our readers and we recently contacted a world expert on aircraft damage tolerance and aging airplanes for some answers. Dr. Matt Creager and John Courtright from SIE gave us a quick tour around the FAA's Enhanced Airworthiness Program for Airplane Systems (EAPAS), and specifically, the impact on IFE. As starters, note that the US FAA now deals with wiring as a SYSTEM! Called Electronic Wiring Interconnection Systems (EWIS), the mechanical and electrical characteristics, testing, routing, maintenance, repair, installation and notation of same, will all take on a new perspective under newer federal regulations. We felt this is going to impact our industry so our experts told IFExpress about a few areas that will affect In-Flight Entertainment. We put the whole story on our website so check it out at www.airfax.com.

After Thought: The nice folks in China who are putting on the IFEC entertainment conference in June contacted us and noted that they have an updated website with more information on their efforts. You can find them at www.chinaifec.com and see their conference topics. We note that Panasonic and OnAir are now their Platinum sponsors.

We're hearing about a potentially huge opportunity for up to 500 aircraft worth of in-seat video, SMS, in-seat power, portables, and more.  If you're not part of this, go ask your marketing guys to beat the bushes.

Upcoming IFExpress Hot Topics will deal with a lot of the technology from many of the vendors we visited there. We were glad to see many old industry friends and glad to make new ones. All but one vendor opened their doors for IFExpress and we hope to share the new technology news stories we found there with our readers!
