Hot Topic: IFE Shades of Grey

There is a grey area in IFE. It lies somewhere between the fixed in-seat and seatback systems from the likes of Panasonic and Thales, and the revolutionary portable hard disk players from companies like Digecor. This quasi-fixed system combines the best of both genres and promises to be a boon to the fourth, and yet unmentioned option, the personal entertainment player. It does not exist on any commercial aircraft but that is why you read IFExpress This new IFE solution does to aircraft what alcohol does to a “Bring Your Own” party – it’s the personal entertainment IFE solution and relies specifically, but not exclusively, on the iPod or other MP3 and MP4 players. We are talking about the "Passenger Entertainment Center" approach to IFE. While borrowed the name from IMS we think it aptly describes the passenger interface approach to personal entertainment players and is the beginning of a whole genre of new passenger dedicated products…very applicable to single-aisle planes. Although simple in concept, the PEC design is relatively straightforward. It differs from other as it provides a wired connection to your favorite digital video or audio player – you bring the entertainment. DC power is supplied from dedicated connectors/ports to charge PED’s and it even has a charging option for your laptop power brick. Some will call it a single-aisle IFE solution because of the low cost and lightweight!

The Entertainment Center Concept

At AIX in Hamburg, IMS, introduced an entertainment system in development whose concept originates from the awareness that an increasing number of passengers bring “carry-on IFE” aboard in the form of video iPods, Zunes, mobile phones, and a host of other personal electronic devices (PEDs) and mobile devices. One of the drivers behind the increasing popularity of such mobile devices among travelers is the small size and weight,” noted Joseph Renton, IMS chairman and CEO. “These devices are very easy to carry onboard. But this advantage becomes a disadvantage with respect to screen size and battery limits.” IMS’ proposed solution is a power embedded, self-contained passenger entertainment and communications center in the seatback that supports both airline-provided and “carry-on IFE”. It is designed to be the solution for the convergence of “carry-on IFE” and airline-provided IFE. Read the whole story and check it out at www.airfax.com.
