Hot Topic: More From AIX!

After seeing so much at the AIX Conference in Hamburg, we though we might bring a few more good ideas to the light of day. Our first, while not IFE related, turns out to be a surprising use of Wi-Fi. The STG WEPPS product from STG Aerospace (The photo luminescent folks) redefines the emergency primary power system by supplying a new battery (lithium sulfur) that is smaller and does not need charging and an on-ground-only wireless monitoring and diagnostic panel thus eliminating the daily battery walk-around. The Wi-Fi network couples all batteries on-board to a simple panel location that monitors status and provided a way to diagnose backup battery problems in a few seconds. Note, the batteries are not charged from the aircraft and do not need maintenance for their life (www.stgaerospace.com).

We really liked (as did the airlines) the Visionary wireless IFE System and shown here, marketing whiz, Bob Guidetti, showing the finer points of the IFE system that needs only power to deliver live, updatable IFE content via an in-cabin wireless network in the licensed 900 MHz band. Video is streamed via the DVB-T format from a central server and transmitter. Airlines love this concept and we expect an announcement of an airline test soon. Note the package size for seatback installations while the small antenna that is used in the network solution will be purloined in an actual application. Obviously, weight and power make this solution a real winner.

Lastly, we are showing the Panasonic magnetic coupled earphone solution (no more broken jacks). Power to operate the phones and signal are coupled directly into the phones allowing users to pull the magnetic clip from the flat seat console surface without the necessity to break an electrical circuit. As we understand the physics, Panasonic is using a very focused "antenna" and operating at frequencies above 1 MHz as the coupling signal. A magnet holds the clip to a ferrous plate under the seat console skin. Modulation type and earphone special circuitry was not disclosed. The units are still in the development phase and to our knowledge, no aircraft installations have been completed.
