Hot Topic: Did We Mention the Forthcoming WAEA TC?

The Hottest Topic this week has got to be the upcoming WAEA Technology Committee meeting set for June 26-27 at the LAX Renaissance hotel (http://www.waea.org). A quick look at the agenda reveals that some real compelling topics are going to be vetted for IFErs:

Digital Content Management, Closed Captioning, Portable Electronics, Wireless Connectivity, and Fiber Optics. To be sure, the big F.O. session will guarantee that you get enough fiber in your diet. Talk about “en-lightening”, the Fiber Optics panel looks to be the “brightest” group of gurus we’ve seen assembled on one stage:

  • Don Stone, KITCO – Fiber Optic training requirements & maintenance procedures
  • Mark Messer, Tensolite – F.O. cable environmental specs and tests
  • Jonathan Prouty, Radiall –Latest news in F.O. connectors
  • Dan Martinec, ARINC – Status of the AEEC FO/CEI Subcommittees work on F.O. interfaces for onboard systems
  • Michael Hackert, US Navy – Progress of the SAE AS-3 Task Group developing a F.O. WDM LAN standard for aviation

These experts are mostly new faces, not seen at the TC before, and they are set to explain the current state of fiber networking technology (e.g., fiber cables, connectors, standards, testing, etc.) and how it will enable the future passenger experience. We are told they will be primed to answer all the lingering questions about fiber including: Fiber Optics maintenance (A sure "hot topic," eh airlines)? Can it be bent like copper wiring? How is it spliced…and for that matter, can it be spliced? What training is available? Where’s the documentation? You will not want to miss this session because there are forthcoming, sales and installations of fiber optic networks on commercial aircraft – would we lie?

And don’t forget the TC’s networking event on the evening of the 26th for your chance to share a story or two about Cindy Tarver and bid her good-bye from IFE. As reported a couple weeks ago in this column, Cindy is retiring, and the TC is planning to bid her a fond farewell – so bring your never-to-be-told-stories, embarrassing photographs, broken promises, past due bills, to-be returned books, and IOU’s to say “good bye” to Cindy. (Ed. Note: In honor of this solemn event the bar will be closed – NOT!)
