Hot Topic: IFE, The Web, Airlines and a Giggle

I have been wanting to write this story ever since our Web Guru sent me this article on how to do almost anything (http://www.ehow.com/how_2053900_crash-inflight-entertainment-system.html). It is called "How to Crash an In-Flight Entertainment System" and it was written by a hacker who was bored on a flight. So, he set about tweaking the controls to see if he could make something happen. We do not know the manufacturer but we assume by now, they have fixed the conditions that let it happen. The eHow Editor said, "Congratulations, you've just made an already trying and uncomfortable situation even more so!" The message here, and the one subliminally placed in this Hot Topic is, the Internet will change the way the airline business fundamentally operates - Corollary 1 - Same goes for IFE!

For our next illustration, dear reader, please go to the following URL http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=41098. The specter of negative viral marketing is evident here because with a simple search, relevant IFE issues are available at the touch of a button. Obviously, the value of online customer feedback should not be underestimated.

Item #3, IFE Not for Me! (http://www.absolutegadget.com/news/entertainment/review-astraeus-inflight-entertainment-system-20070712-628.html) his kind of customer feedback is a real head banger for airline marketing types. Once again, the Internet has given a voice to customer complaints and airlines had better heed this kind of warning because passengers can now squawk to a very big audience.

On to example #4 - The Internet will point out when airlines do something dumb, but seldom expound on good deeds (http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2007320193,00.html). This one is self explanatory?

Our next item came out of a search on IFE, however, we found a reference to a JD Power airline satisfaction survey (http://www.inbusinesslasvegas.com/2007/06/29/tourism.html) and one we would have not found if we did not know one existed. Read "Plugging in at 30,000 Feet". Perhaps a Las Vegas website was a strange place to find news about passenger preference but Internet news about airlines and IFE comes from websites one would least expect it.

Lastly, let's end on a high note. I cannot remember who sent me this video clip but certainly one value of the Internet and airlines must be humor. Check it out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Sg4qO43UpQ) If you don't laugh, check the local obituary column... you might be dead.
