Hot Topic: SafeCell Developed for In-flight Telephony by ASI!

WAEA Conference Exclusive

Here’s one new product that you will see at the ASI Booth during the WAEA Conference in Miami…and it is another mind blower from those crazy Aussies! SafeCell is their answer to using a personal handset for text (data) messaging, and, a VOIP call via headset. Think of it this way, SafeCell interoperates (Gee, I have been waiting to use that word) between your cell phone and the aircraft Wi-Fi network. It talks to your phone via a Bluetooth connection (or COM ports on wired handsets in a standard In-Flight Entertainment system) after you have downloaded an app called "Zippitt" from, we assume, the ground network. The phone is then controlled by the SafeCell module which provides a Bluetooth connection to the phone for text, a Wi-Fi interface to the aircraft hotspot (Bad term!), and it contains a jack for a headset for VOIP. Now before you start panting for one on your next flight, there are a few gotchas. The first, you will need the ASI Swift 64 Gateway/Server and at $25,000 for the complete connection package, it is a steal. You will also need Swift 64 airborne service (that’s another issue), and your passengers will need to have purchased a SafeCell module at the airport. We like it!

CEO, Ron Chapman tells IFExpress that he has the patents in place and that developments in communication chipsets have facilitated the product. Amazingly, SafeCell talks to almost any cell phone protocol (GSM, AMPS, TDMA, CDMA…more in the spec sheet). We also suspect that the “Zippitt” app controls the phone output power. First flyable prototypes available in 1Q 2007.No doubt you will want to contact Ron or ASI and you can get their contact information as we did – “Google” (ASIQ) their stock ticker and call Australia - +61-3-9437-1233 or email Ron at ron.chapman@asiq.com. See you at the premier In-Flight Entertainment Show, the WAEA Conference in Miami. You can call us there at 206 229-7890 or use email terry.wiseman@gmail.com.
