Hot Topic: WAEA Conference Starts Today!
To
kick off this year’s show we thought we would highlight a few of the stories
coming out of Toronto... here we go:
- Watch for TEAC to announce a BIG deal with the UAL makeover for IFE - we have an exclusive on the release!
- QEST Airborne Broadband Antennas will be demonstrating a very small, simultaneous L and Ku Band Dual Band antenna at Booth 730 - we are looking forward to this one.
- IMS is looking to more portable IFE developments with concepts that include video-on-a-tray, a very clever “pop-out” concept for a player that keeps the unit unplayable without the dock and a simple idea that deserves a prize. It is a USB connection that almost faces the floor. Why? Simple, you can’t spill liquids in it and the inherent drag of the mating surfaces keeps it in place.
- AeroMobile (Booth 1700) will have a live demo of their mobile broadband service and, we understand, at Panasonic too.
- And speaking of Panasonic, it looks like the “cool room” is hot again. We asked Panasonic PR about their new offerings this year and we were told; Panasonic will be demonstrating an advanced, wireless food tray keyboard that offers several improvements such as regionalization, tactile touch, and non-cell rechargeable power that supports our Green environmentally friendly initiative. A fully functioning display of the new programmable controller coupled with a novel approach to providing game control, an advanced demonstration of our wireless food tray keyboard including regional flexibility and a unique approach to providing power, a free space interactive menu system, and a few surprises relative to our iPod efforts. Man, we LOVE the cool room in Booth 600.
- InFlight Peripherals has a few surprises too; look for their new “pop-out” iPod holder and IFE interface... it’s a little slow but smoooth!
- DigEplayer (Wencor) looks like they will be showing off their new XT model and new sales veep - Bill Kendrick.
- Astronics has a new AC/DC box that is focused on the handhelds and looking at providing 110VAC to passengers. It looks like they are covering all bases with 110VAC and selectable DC out via separate connectors. In fact, it is flying today on two North American carriers.
- ASI Entertainment will no doubt be selling SafeCell, their answer to inflight cell phone connectivity, especially since it has been flight tested and now patented.
- AirCell brought a fuselage demo of their new ground-based connectivity, and yes it looks like an American plane... their announced first customer for the data service
- eDigital is demo’ing a 20+ hour portable IFE battery in Booth 1200!

- Boeing’s B787 Dreamliner first flight plans slipped from Halloween to Christmas and may be all wet until 2008... don’t go there! Problems with systems, EMI/RFI and fasteners are causing the plane maker to wait. Did we mention weight?
- Is Boeing looking for another IFE supplier for the B787? Rumor has it that weight and cost are at issue. Could Honeywell or Rockwell be in the running for a new entertainment system for the plastic, fantastic plane?
