Hot Topic: A Twofer – WAEA Gatelink Products

This week we feature two airport-to-aircraft wireless data links (we use this term since there has been quite a furor over the Gatelink term). These ATADL’s differ in architecture and serve the bizjet and commercial fleet respectively. Interestingly, we know that there are quite a few bizjet/airport installations of the Avionica product but the Thales system is just finishing development and certification.

Avionica – SecureLINK enables secure, wireless transfer of data to and from the aircraft, eliminating the cost and delay of traditional aircraft media such as paper charts, QAR magnetic tapes, optical disks, PCMCIA cards, USB keys, etc. It establishes an authenticated and encrypted log-on automatically as the aircraft enters the system’s wireless network. Within moments, it communicates with the Airside Local Area Network to transmit and receive all information without human intervention, and eliminating the possibility of misplaced media and lost data. With an optional second radio, securLINK provides cabin WiFi access to 802.11 onboard devices, such as Avionica’s RSU II Onboard or even passenger laptops and PDAs. We particularly like the co-located VHF/Wi-Fi blade antenna that minimizes skin hole punching. The small aircraft LRU (shown in the photo, provides the necessary interconnect between the antenna and aircraft systems) For more information, contact Carlos Gonzalez (shown in the photo) at egonzalez@avionica.com or call him at 786 544-1142. Thales – Thales and Proximetry announced today their partnership to offer GateSync™: a high-speed, broadband wireless transmission system and service designed to deliver media content and aircraft operational data on and off the aircraft while on the ground. The innovative GateSync™ solution has been under development for the past 18-months and will leverage a combination of standards-based WiMAX 802.16 wireless hardware with specialized software technologies. Thales envisions the deployment of the GateSync solution as an integral support service of its global Ground Support Information System (GSIS) support service. Thales has plans to deploy GateSync™ to a number of international airport “hubs” starting in 2008. Unlike 802.11 WiFi networks which have limited range, data reliability issues, and contention issues, the Thales GateSync™ service offers high-bandwidth (> 200 Mbps + capacity) wireless connectivity service within a 3 – 5 mile radius around an airport environment providing a guaranteed level of performance and security. Each GateSync™ airport solution incorporates one high performance WiMAX base station, with one or more repeater stations, and two WiMAX GateSync™ subscriber stations installed within each aircraft. Proximetry’s patent pending software, AirSync EWM™, will be utilized to dynamically configure and tune the WiMAX GateSync™ network to achieve optimal download configurations and meet the needs of Thales’ Airline clientele while also tailoring content “payloads” to each aircraft flight. The photo of the aircraft and airport antennas shown below, give an idea as to size. The airport antenna is about 1 square meter and the aircraft antenna is attached to the plane window, also negating requirement for airplane skin punctures. Shown here, Brad Forman, Thales IFS CEO, demonstrates GateSync usage. Note that he is controlling aircraft data uploads with a PDA.
