Hot Topic: Battery Suspect In Securaplane Fire!

In a follow-up from last week’s Lithium-Ion battery story we learned of a battery generated fire at the Securaplane headquarters in Arizona. We note that this was not a laptop battery fire, however, we heard that a Li-ion battery was suspected. Sources near to the company told us that the fire was initially put out (or so it was thought) and then reignited only to burn into the building walls and ceiling. One person was hurt and the company, we understand, is maintaining a “business as usual” policy while the rebuilding commences. The one story structure was constructed before local regulations required sprinkler systems. The $2 million dollar blaze occurred in mid November and a local was quoted in the Northwest Explorer as follows: John Sullivan, community services division chief of the Golder Ranch Fire District, said "..investigation into the cause of the fire is focusing on the possibilities that it was caused by a defective battery, defective battery charging equipment or worker error." The Arizona Daily Star Reported; "The battery may have been a lithium battery," Sullivan said. We wanted to share this news to alert our readers to the story and the potential dangers of Li-ion battery fires (if indeed our sources are correct as to the nature of the battery). We wish the folks at Securaplane the best of luck and we hope all our readers will offer help and support them as needed.
